How Long Does It Take to Get Amended Tax Return Back?

Update: One of our readers,Pete Lytle, mentioned that “The IRS did not start processing amended returns until August 1st due to COVID-19. They received mine on March 16th. They said that the 16 week count down starts on August 1st. Which means I may have to wait until around Thanksgiving. Although the rep stated since mine was received in March, “it should only take a few weeks”. Now it’s near mid September and nothing. And my car has now been repossessed. Thanks IRS. Interesting note: during the shut down, the IRS collections department was open. I am hurt, pissed off and sad.

Recently, I filed my 1040X and I used TurboTax Online. I have to say, amending a tax return with TurboTax is really as easy as 1, 2, 3. I just logged into my account and clicked on “Amend Your Tax Return” for 2014 and it guided me through the process. My case was easy. My son was born in December of 2014. Because he was born overseas, it took a couple of months for him to receive his Social Security card. When I filed my tax return, I still hadn’t receive his Social Security card, so I had to file it without adding him as my dependent. We finally received his card and I updated the 1040X form immediately, and I realized I can get about $1,500 dollars back because I am eligible for the Child Tax Credit, which is $1,000.

The other thing is that it doesn’t matter if your child is born in January or December; as long as your newborn is born last year, you can claim the full amount, not just a portion of it. Also, make sure that you sign the 1040X at the bottom and date it. If it’s a joint return, your spouse has to sign and date it as well. You still need to print and mail the forms. You can’t e-file your tax return.

Receiving your amended tax returns back takes a long time. Usually, it takes about 3 weeks from the date you mailed the amended return for it to show up in the IRS system.

Thereafter, you can get your amended tax refund after 16 weeks. Before, it used to take 8 to 12 weeks for processing time before you would receive your tax return, but an increase in the number of amended returns has compelled the IRS to extend the normal processing time to 16 weeks. You can monitor the status of your tax return with this tool: Where is my amended return?.

Where’s My Amended Refund?

Mistakes on federal tax returns are normal and they can be fixed. When we are filing our tax returns each year, there is no guarantee that we will not make mistakes. After all, we are just humans. These mistakes may be in the form of mathematical errors. The IRS recognizes that this is normal and, as such, will usually correct them and provide you with a correspondence that indicates the changes made. However, there are situations where you may have unwittingly left out some incomes in your filing, or you made changes to your claimable credits and filing status, and you need to amend your return in order to avoid tax penalties.

An amended tax return is your chance to correct your mistakes; it’s sort of a second chance, your do-over, provided by the IRS via Form 1040X. Knowing that your amended tax return can take a long time, you usually don’t get an immediate response. It takes too much boring and frustrating time waiting to know the status of your amended return, and even more frustrating is the fact that the IRS call center will not give you any additional information when your amended return is being processed, so not until it is completed. Generally, it can take up to 16 weeks from the day the IRS receives your amended return for it to be processed, and it may take 3 weeks from the day you mailed it for it to show up in the IRS system. This is why “Where’s my Amended Return” comes in handy.

“Where is My Amended Tax Return?” is a tool that you can use to monitor the status of Form 1040X Amended Tax Return for the current year, and even up to three years prior.

How to File Taxes. It’s your Civic Duty as a Taxpayer

Tax time usually makes people apprehensive, as not everybody enjoys the prospect of filing taxes. However, filing taxes is your obligation, which you have to fulfill every year or face the consequences. Most people will find it easier to file taxes if they know that there are several ways of filing taxes and many options they can choose from when doing it.

You can either file your taxes online or do paper filing. Here are some ideas on how to file your taxes this current year:

  1. File your tax for free online at the IRS website if your earnings are below $54,000.
  2. You can use the IRS e-file when your earnings are above $54,000. You can find additional details at the IRS website.
  3. Send the printout of forms from the IRS website to their office.
  4. Get the services of a professional tax consultant and file a tax form.
  5. Hire a professional accountant to help you with filing taxes.
  6. If you are late in filing your returns, you can go to a tax attorney or a tax agent, if you think your case might be difficult.
  7. You can use programs such as Turbo Tax and Quicken to file a hard copy of your returns.
  8. If you have a good knowledge of filing returns, you can do it yourself and send your forms to the IRS.

The above are a few ways you can file your tax returns this year. The one that suits you the best will depend on your individual situation. When filing your taxes, you may require the services of a qualified tax preparer, if you believe you have an intricate tax situation.

How to Amend a Tax Return. Can I Amend a Tax Return Online?

You can file to amend your tax returns if you want to correct your filing status, total income, claimed dependents, tax deductions, or tax credits. When you have such errors as incorrect math in your tax figures, there is no need to file for an amendment, as the IRS computers will fix it and send you the corrections.

Unfortunately, Form 1040X for filing tax returns cannot be filed online. You can use tax-prep software to fill out the paperwork, but you need to submit the paper manually to the IRS.

Amending a tax return is done in two parts, which include:

  • Filling out a new Form 1040
  • Reporting the difference between the original tax return and the new one on the IRS Form 1040X

The IRS tends to pay more attention to the amended returns than the original returns. Therefore, ensure that your new Form 1040 is very accurate.

Keep the original and amended Form 1040 side by side while preparing Form 1040X. Form 1040X contains three columns; you will report items from the original tax return in Column A. Column C also contains the same items from the original 1040, while Column B is where you put the difference between the old and the new figures. Ensure that the figures you have in Column A and Column B add up to the figures that appear in Column C.

Part two of Form 1040 is the most important part. This part will report the exact changes you made to the original Form 1040 and the reasons for those changes. Ensure that you are clear and concise with your explanations.

Filing for Refund: If the amendment is for the purposes of getting a refund or increasing the previous refund, you need to file Form 1040X within two years of paying the taxes, or three years of filing your original return, whichever comes later.

How Far Back Can I Amend a Tax Return?

The IRS allows you to correct the mistakes you made in your tax returns. However, the time to correct these mistakes has a deadline attached to it.

You are able to file for amended returns three years from the date that the original tax return was due. When you get your new Form 1040X, you need to indicate the year of the tax return that you are amending at the top of your form. According to the IRS, your amendment must come within three years of your original return. For instance, if the due date of the return was February 26, 2013, the IRS will give you until February 26, 2016 to file a Form 1040X for 2012. In the case where you made the tax payment after you filed the return, the IRS will set your deadline for two years from the date of your payment, assuming that would be later.

When To Get Your Amended Tax Refund Back?

After I am done with amending my tax return because I need to add my son as my dependent. I can see some estimated time frame for the tax refund. Below is a screen shot.

How Long Does It Take To Get Your Amended Tax Return Back? Where's My amended Refund?

It tells you the estimated time frame is 8-20 weeks. If you choose to get your refund with direct deposit, it should be much faster and it guarantees the check won’t be lost in the mail. Always save a copy for yourself to reference in the future just in case.

The other thing is it’s possible that you have to amend your tax return and you actually don’t expect any refund. If that’s the case, you still have to do it and always keep IRS informed and do the right thing. If you have to pay them more, then just brace yourself and do it.

Accuracy is a very important task because if the details are fudgy, it will take more time to get the amended Tax return back. The IRS service center might require all the documents which will be attached to the form for submission. Official would verify and scrutinize the documents individually to ensure that the tax returns are filled in a proper manner.

After completing the first step, it’s time to fill in the second form 1040X. It is bestowed with the summary of the contents from 1040. Details of the original tax returns should also be filled in 1040X because it will help to evaluate the difference in the amendment. One of the most important parts of the form 1040X is C where it is important to explain the reasons behind the amended tax returns. The causes must be clearly explained because it might get rejected by the IRS. Therefore, one should take extra precaution while filling the form.

Number crunching plays a major role while evaluating the tax returns. Hence, a person should be vigilant in entering the correct figures because a slight mistake could lead to a delay in the return of the amended tax information. All the information such as salary and deductions should be double checked to ensure that data is authentic.

Whilst filling the form, one must remember to append the signature and the date. It will help the authorities to track the information. Sometimes, the form is too complex for the people therefore they might need the assistance of an accountant. It is also crucial to add the signature of the accountant so that IRS has detailed information. After submission of the form, people can track its status online by filling in the application number. Amended tax returns are filed in conditions when the status, dependents or total income are reported incorrectly. Mailing the amended tax return is necessary because it can’t be e-filled.

Can I amend my tax return myself? Do I need an accountant?

There is a saying that goes like this “once bitten twice shy”. When you made a mistake in filing tax returns because of inexperience, there is a probability that you can make another error when you apply for amendment.

You need the service of professional accountant while you are filing for your tax returns. He will help you to appropriately file a good tax return free of errors, he can also help you to figure out if you are due for refund and as well improve your future tax situation by suggesting things to look out for in your future returns.

However, if you missed out on hiring a professional accountant the first time you file your tax returns, don’t repeat the mistake again. You definitely require the service of an accountant to help you in filing for your amended tax return. When you have lots of investments, it makes way more sense to manage your tax professionally in one place, it is the best way to become financial independent and get a handle on your finances.

I filed an amended tax return on 02/02/2017 and they said it will take up to 16 weeks for it to be processed. Well today is June 26, 2017 and it still shows no update for my return statues. There is no way to call and talk to anyone unless you have received a stating you owe them money. What are we to do in times like this?

My husbands EX falsely filed her tax returns claiming their 18 yr old as her dependent. He has NEVER lived there in 8 years. And per the decree she was to stop claiming him. Well…. she claimed him as a dependent and I know LIED! My husbands return got rejected. I contacted her, told her of her false claims and IRS laws and she said she amended her return… my husbands return is still being rejected. How long do we wait or should we call the IRS?

I sent my amended return with delivery confirmation. It showed that they received my amended return on May 2, 2018, but as of June 6, nothing yet. It looks like I’ll have to wait another week or 2 before it shows up. And then usually another 8-12 weeks before the next step shows up.

Last year I did an amendment on my taxes and I had a check in a little over a week. Was very surprised. I guess it depends on either how aggressive the IRS is on reviewing the amended taxes or when you amended them by date. I’d assume the quicker you amended the better. I just did an amendment last week on Apr 17. We will see how long that takes.

I just sent my amend return in today which is Aug 10/18 and I had been ask the IRS was there any thing that I need to send them and they said no. Now I had to send a amend to correct where I had put my earning in the wages blank so I had to change it on the amend form. The tax advocate had taken my case because it has been a long time sense I had did the return. I sent the department of treasure one copy and the tax advocate a copy. I just hope that they can help me cause, I am tired of trying to fight this battle alone.

Status said received on March 12, 2018, on July 2nd (16 weeks) it changed to a message telling me to call, I was told it was selected for examination and to call back if I have not received any contact by August 11th. Today the 13th I called again and was told the examination period is over and it may take up to 120 more days to receive the refund. The time frames they give you are completely arbitrary and mean nothing. Has anyone ever actually gotten a check?

When I finally got to speak to a person, he ask why I filed an amendment. I told him why, then he put me on hold for another 10 minutes. This was several times, so after about 30 minutes for so finally he told me he was moving my case over to be processed and the IRS has an additional 30 days. I ask if they pay interested on late refunds (LOL). Now I am still waiting like everyone else.

Up date- I had sent one copy to the department of treasure and the other copy to the tax advocate like I say in my last post. I call the IRS on the 9/1/18 and they said they had receive the amendment that I had sent them and had made the adjustment on it.My advocate had call and told me that they had gotten the amendment and had made the adjustment on my return and told me how much I would be getting back and when it will be going to my bank. I am very glad to have had her the tax advocate on my side. You know it had been ever sense 1/18 and now it is 9/8/18. I hope this will help someone else and made God bless each of you. If you click on get your tax record and create a user and password, you can click on the tax year and you will see if you have any updates and a 846 code. 846 is telling you that they have processed your amended return and it will also give you the date your check is scheduled to be cut. The where’s my amended return, is never updated properly.

Has anyone actually received their amendment return yet, If so did it take the full 16 weeks. I’ve read the comments and feel very hopeless of receiving my amendment before the holidays. I have a taxpayer advocate who is helping me as well. I mail my amendment in on 10/23/18 and it shows receive on 10/29/18.

I filed an amended return on 1/30/10 for 15’, 16,’ and 17’ all at the same time
Was received in two days. I sent with a tracker. 16’ & 17’ said adjusted 2/22/19 and completed 3/15/19 but I haven’t received a letter or check. BUT for 15’ it says adjusted 3/15/19 and not yet completed but I received a check in the mail on 3/18/19. I called and got disconnected.. will follow up.. hope this helps someone

So I was able to speak to someone who informed me that although 17’ & 16’ say completed, they are actually still processing and apologized.. I was informed to just check the mail up until May 22 which would be the end of the 16 week mark

Well today is 4/24/19 and I checked the website and it’s still saying received. Does anyone knows how long did it take for the status to change and does it really take 16weeks to receive your money?

Hi Beatrice, thanks for the update. I filled my first amended return too on 03/20/2019. Today is 05/08/2019 and it is still showing received and processing.
What does your message say exactly when you check it? Does it tell you to call them? You may need to call the IRS to check with them or you will receive a letter in a few weeks from the IRS if they need more information.
        Keep us updated. Thank you.

UPDATE….. Today is 5/20/19 and I received a letter from the IRS but before I get into that let me tell y’all what happened. Well I received a message on the website 5/3/19 Saying: Your amended return was received on April/10/19. However, We need more info. You will receive a letter requesting additional info please send the requested items within 30 days after you receive the letter. I waited a couple of days to see was the letter going to arrive. Still no letter so on 5/15/19 I called the IRS, was told my case was closed but not showing why but there were a letter sent out telling me. Now fast forward to today 5/20/19 I finally received my letter from the IRS and it’s basically saying that my EIC on line 14 is not adding up to the amount I should be receiving back. Guess now I gotta go back to the person from H&R Block and see if she can fix it.

      Hi Tracey,
Hope everything solved by now. If not try giving a call to the IRS. Most of the time you can get a live person by following this instruction and call them as early as possible when they start at 8 AM morning:

Before you call, make sure you have all of the information that you need.
      - Social Security cards and birth dates for those who were on the return you are calling about.
      - An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) letter if you don’t have a Social Security number (SSN)
      - Filing status – Single, Head of Household, Married Filing Joint or Married Filing Separate
      - Your prior-year tax return. We may need to verify your identity before answering certain questions
      - A copy of the tax return you’re calling about
      - Any letters or notices we sent you
The IRS telephone number is 1-800-829-1040, and they are available from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The best time to call is early in the morning.
The first question the automated system will ask you is to choose your language.
Once you’ve set your language, do NOT choose Option 1 (regarding refund info). Choose option 2 for “Personal Income Tax” instead.
Next, press 1 for “form, tax history, or payment”.
Next, press 3 “for all other questions.”
Next, press 2 “for all other questions.”
When the system asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, do NOT enter anything.
After it asks twice, you will be prompted with another menu.
Finally, press 2 for personal or individual tax questions. The system should then transfer you to an agent.
      Best of luck.

I mailed my 2016 amended return off last year in September and they received it October 2nd. Still haven’t received a letter in mail nor check. Since March of this year they’ve been telling me it’s processing, then they sent a referral, then the person doing the referral sent it to examination where they gave me a 30 day time frame. Last week examination dept told me it was going to be audited. I called this week and they said it was closed in April but still is in the examination dept. I called my tax advocate and she stated it’s still open. Ughhhhhh

I mailed my amended return 12/05/19. I finally received a letter from the IRS that they received my amended return but the tracking tool “Where’s My Amended Return” has never changed, it says my amended return information is unavailable. I’m a bit frustrated not only because the IRS owes me a lot of money but because I’m also waiting for the IRS to process my amended return so I can file for this year without worrying that the IRS will offset my return for a past tax debt that the amended return will resolve.

We mailed our amended return on March 2 certified mail. Tracking shows it was received on March 5th. Today is April 15th and when I check status online and this is what it says:
    Where’s My Amended Return
Your amended return information is currently unavailable in this application. It takes up to 3 weeks for an amended return to show on your account. You can generally expect your amended return to be processed within 16 weeks from the date we receive it. Check the date you filed your amended return and try again later.
Obviously, it’s been more than 3 weeks since they received it but it is not showing up as received. I tried calling and due to the corona virus (I guess), they said they have limited staff and would not be taking calls. Check the website! I’m wondering when it will at least show up as received! HELP!

Filed my Son’s taxes threw turbo tax on 02/04/2020. Said everything went threw. Suppose to be going in Direct deposit. Never received any money, & never received stimulus. It’s been well over 4 months. When I check under IRS.GOV, its telling me it’s still being processed. When I check the stimulus its saying they dont have enough information, & they are still working on it. This is a bunch of crap. He has tried calling, & some one leaves him on hold & then the phone hangs up. Wtf is going on. I would love some answers.

The IRS did not start processing amended returns until August 1st due to Covid.

I still hadn’t receive his Social Security card, so I had to file it without adding him as my dependent. We finally received his card and I updated the 1040X form immediately, and I realized I can get about $1,500 dollars back because I am eligible for the Child Tax Credit, which is $1,000

I filed my amended return on March 12, 2020 and it shows received April 13, 2020 but not yet processed. Its been a year since they received it and up until two days ago I’ve been told they are backlogged to just keep waiting, however when I called the other day I was told it was processed on April 10, 2021 and closed to be looking for a check in the mail. It does still show on the wheres my amended return that it has not been processed. I would say call the number listed on your amended returns and have someone check it for you all and maybe your in the same situation of it not being updated online and hopefully get answers. Good luck!
