There are new STAR registration rules!
All homeowners receiving a basic STAR exemption must register with the New York State Tax Department in or der to receive the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.
Who must register? All resident homeowners who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption must register.
What about Senior Citizens?
Seniors receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not affected by the new registration requirement.
However, in order to rece ive STAR, seniors must continue to apply annually or pa rticipate in the Income Verification Program. To apply, a new applicant must use Form RP-425 and file the application with their local assessor.
When does registration begin?
Registration will continue through Decemb er 31, 2013. The Tax Department will mail instruct ions to all homeown ers who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption.
How does a home owner register?
Online registration is the fastest and easiest way for homeowners to register- www.tax.ny.gov Homeowners will need thei r STAR code to register . To obtain a STAR code, homeowners can look it up on line, or call the Tax Department at (518)-457-2036. Telephon e registration can be do ne at (518 )-457-2036. The Tax Department wi ll send homeowners addi tional reminders in December 2013 and January 2014.
